Golden Ticket is a Single-Player map created in UDK. The main feature of this map is that majority of the game takes place in the same corridor repeatedly but modified in each instance. For example, one section may have you swimming through the same space submerged in water while another requires you to fight an army of oompa loompa robots. Regardless of the circumstances, the goal is always to reach the golden door at the end of the room to advance to the next area. It sounds as crazy as it plays.
The concept was born somewhere between sleep deprivation and total insanity. One night, I caught a re-run of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. One thought led to another and I came up with the premise to design the map around. What if Charlie didn't win the factory? What if Willy Wonka's faith in humanity was crushed from that moment on? What if he went insane and replaced his oompa loompas with mechanized versions?
As mentioned, this hallways is where the player will repeatedly find themselves.I avoided making the corridor ornate and heavily-detailed because I wanted the player to be able to discern their orientation/position relative to the room. In addition, I always needed the player to have a universal goal of reaching the small golden door which position remains the same regardless of the room modifiers.
The final room is a boss fight against Willy Wonka himself. Even after surviving his trials, the last involves defeating him in combat to prove worthy of taking over his advanced factory. Before the skirmish begins, his great glass elevator sockets into a mechanized spider-like vehicle which fires rockets and a powerful laser. In this room, the player's feet are planted against the back wall and movement restricted to that space. The visual distinction in this level has the walls stretching infinitely, having Wonka's machine drag and move in tandem with it. I was particularly proud of this segment since the machine was created with only stock UDK meshes and materials.
