Checkmate is a Capture-The-Flag map created with the Unreal Development Kit in a 2-man group with Dominic Patrick O'Grady. The map features a base for each side and 3 levels that shift, transform and dynamically adjust through the course of gameplay. To really bring a sense of co-operation and team interaction, 4 classes were created from the ground-up with each having strengths and weaknesses. These two elements encourage and reward strategic choice, from deciding the composition of classes within a team to using the terrain layout to one's advantage.
The concept behind Checkmate was that an intergalactic being has transported two planet's greatest warriors to battle to decide the fate of their worlds. This map supports 6-8 players.
Players start in an enclosed room with 4 large chess pieces presented before them. Touching one will transport the player to their respective base to prepare for match start. Which piece they choose to play as will dictate their stats like weapon stats, health and movespeed. Upon death, they respawn in the room to select their class before getting back into the fight.
This is the Kismet for Checkmate. After designing the level, I matinee'd each level transformation upon flag capture, assigned stats based on class and ensured the surfaces in the maze would destroy a player if caught pressed between them and the ceiling.
